In den Jahren 1946 und 1963 gab es auf dieser Insel ein strenges politisches Gef\u00e4ngnis, sp\u00e4ter Gef\u00e4ngnis f\u00fcr Kriminelle. Das Gef\u00e4ngnis wurde 1988 geschlossen. Die Bucht befindet sich einen Kilometer s\u00fcdlich von Jablanac. Zur Bucht f\u00fchrt ein steiniger  in die steile K\u00fcste eingemei\u00dfelter Weg. Die K\u00fcste ist 900m lang und 50m bis 150m breit. Die Bucht ist von steilen Felsen umgeben, die auch bis 100m H\u00f6he erreichen. Zavratnica steht seit dem  Jahre 1978 als Teil des Parks Velebit auf der Liste der Reservate der Weltbiosph\u00e4re unter Unesco Schutz. In der Bucht versank w\u00e4hrend des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein deutsches Kriegsschiff, welches heute eine Herausforderung f\u00fcr die Taucher Den Namen tr\u00e4gt er nach dem Harz des schwarzen Kiefers, \u00bbpaklina\u00ab, das als Beschichtung  f\u00fcr Schiffe benutzt wird. J\u00e4hrlich gibt es im Park rund 100000 Besucher, von April bis November auch Kletterer aus aller Welt. Der Park sorgt auch f\u00fcr Begeisterung bei Wanderern und Bergsteigern.  Mehr als 150 km Wege f\u00fchren bis zur H\u00f6hle Manita pe\u010d, bis zu zwei Bergh\u00fctten oder bis zu mehreren Spitzen der Velebit- Bergkette.
